If you want some help getting in the festive spirit and you’re in the Westerleigh area you might want to drop in to Mill Crescent, Westerleigh. Residents there have once again put on an amazing display for a good cause. This year’s charity is the Teenage Cancer Trust, which is devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young adults with cancer.

Safer Stronger Community Group
Working together to help
improve your neighbourhood
Regular meetings are held for all
local residents and organisations to discuss local issues and community
projects. The meetings are attended by
representatives from South Gloucestershire Council, Avon and Somerset Police,
Avon Fire and Rescue, Town and Parish Councils, and local organisations.
Everyone is welcome, you can raise any improvements or issues you may have, or
simply come along and listen to what is being discussed for your area. The more residents that attend, the better
the group can reflect the needs of the local area and help influence decisions.

Burglary
The Police have told us that, at about 5.45 pm yesterday, there was an attempted break-in at a house in the Quadrangle, followed by a successful break-in to a house in the same street.
Please be aware that the number of burglaries increases at this time of year.
The Police advise you to make it seem as though the house is occupied: use time-switches for light and radio.
Keep people off your property with thorny bushes / hedges, if you can.
Mark your valuable property (your Neighbourhood Watch Contact can supply a UV pen) and register it with www.immobilise.com.

Latest on Westerleigh smell
During the summer more smells were reported in Westerleigh village, which appeared to be linked to hydrogen sulphide in the sewers. All those involved have been working hard to find a solution. At the end of October, Tulip started using a new chemical to dose their effluent, which has reduced the levels of the gas in their rising main. They will continue to use this while they work with the Environment Agency and independent experts to find a more permanent solution.

Road Closure
While Westerleigh Road may be closed at the double railway arches as you enter the village from Yate, most of the businesses in the village are very much open – and they’d still like you to visit!
The village shop is closed until the road closure ends next week but Wot Nots, the New Inn, Ye Olde Inne and the other businesses in the village are still open. You can get to them by entering the village from the other end – either via the traffic lights at the cross roads at the top of Shorthill Road or via the Kidney Hill junction.
And if you are on foot or a bicycle you can still get through the railway arches as well.
Monday 30 September 2013
Traffic Alert Westerleigh to Yate road to be closed for 10 days from 30 september
Traffic Alert Westerleigh to Yate road to be closed for 10 days from 30 september
Between 30th September and 9th October, Westerleigh Road will be completely closed at the double railway arches so that Network Rail can carry out urgent repairs on the bridges.
This means that for ten days you won’t be able to get through from Westerleigh to Yate in either direction. Unfortunately it’s not possible for Network Rail to close just half the road because of the size of the machinery they need to use.
There will be warning signs about the closure at the entrance to Nibley Lane from Badminton Road and at the Shire Way roundabout and a diversion will be in operation.
This is likely to put pressure on other roads in the area, so please allow extra time if your journey to work takes you that way.

Recycling Services
South Gloucestershire residents are set to have even more opportunities to recycle their household waste, following a majority decision by South Glos councillors. Plans to include mixed plastics, drinks cartons and small electrical items within kerbside recycling services from next year were approved by members of the Communities Committee, as part of the council’s Waste Strategy for 2013-19.
The proposed new traffic calming measures for Westerleigh Road and Shorthill will not now put to a South Glos Council Committee until November. The planning officer also says that there are additional costs which cannot be found this financial year.
Westerleigh Parish Council is planning to arrange a meeting, with some parishioners and SGC planners invited to attend.
The next Frampton Cotterell, Westerleigh, Coalpit Heath & Iron Acton Safer Stronger Community Group meeting is to be held on Tuesday 24 September 2013, 7.30pm at Iron Acton Village Hall (High Street, Iron Acton, BS37 9UH) and we would like to encourage residents in the areas of Frampton Cotterell, Westerleigh, Coalpit Heath and Iron Acton to come along.
The Parish Council website cannot currently be updated with minutes of the PC and committee meetings. If you want a copy, email the Clerk at westerleighpc@btinternet.com .
