Mill Crescent lights - a great result!
Mill Crescent lights - a great result
Friday 31stJanuary saw the proceeds of this year’s Christmas light display being handed over to
representatives from the Teenage Cancer Trust at The New Inn - a very enjoyable social occasion.
Thanks to Chris for his hospitality.
£2511.67 was a tremendous result, and credit is due to the residents of Mill Crescent and the wider
village for their displays, and to Martin and Rachel Gay who had the task of counting the donations on a
daily basis.
This year, contributions were gratefully received from the Westerleigh Buff Lodge and the Women’s
Institute. Not forgetting our pubs: Ye Olde Inne held a darts match against Tulip and N.P.H. hire
workers, and Chris at the New Inn held a Christmas Raffle with proceeds to the fund.
Laura Scowen accepted the cheque and said: “Teenage Cancer Trust would like to say an enormous thank you to the residents of Mill Crescent and everyone who donated to their Christmas lights display for raising an incredible £2,511.67. This money will go towards Teenage Cancer Trust’s South West Appeal, to fund and build the region’s first specialist unit for young people with cancer at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre. The unit has been designed to be as close as possible to a young person’s normal life and will include both in-patient and out-patient floors complete with en-suite bedrooms, social areas, a kitchen and dining area, quiet rooms and consulting rooms. For the first time young people with cancer in the South West will be able to be treated together and have access to the very best specialist care and support that they need in an environment tailored to their needs.
Teenage Cancer Trust is delighted to announce that we have raised £2.3 million of the total £2.5 million
needed to open this unit and, thanks to the kind support of people like the Mill Crescent residents, are
hoping to raise the final £200,000 for the unit to open this spring’’.

Numerous products are available to reduce the risk of your vehicle(s) being targeted, but products accredited to 'Secured by Design' standard are Police preferred. These include the simple and cost effective Retainagroup etching kits; the Fleet Talk 'cat clamp' and the SMS 'cat' alarm, each of which might be viewed on the Secured by Design website under the heading 'Vehicle Security'.
In addition to the above, and where appropriate, consider signage to emphasise preventative measures taken, and general security, such as compound security and parking vehicles in such a manner as to make 'cats' as inaccessible as possible.
Needless to say, please report any suspicious activity to the Police on the 101 number.

Please be on your guard against unexpected callers.
We have had some information from our colleagues in Bristol that visits from doorstep salesmen have been a common feature of their enquiries following recent burglaries. These salesmen are said to have travelled from the Middlesborough area.
Our advice is:
.Always put the door chain on and ask to see the pedlar's certificate of anyone selling door-to-door and if you are at all suspicious shut the door and call us straight away on 101. Selling door-to-door without a licence is an offence.
.Make sure doors and windows are secure so no one can sneak into your home while you are engaged at the front door.
.Look out for elderly and vulnerable neighbours and call us immediately if you see anyone you don't know who is acting suspiciously around a vulnerable neighbours' home.
.Always secure all windows and doors when you are not at home.
.Set your security alarm if you have one.
.Use timers switches to make it appear as if someone is home.
.Call us immediately on 101 if you have concerns about people you have seen acting suspiciously in your area. If you see a crime in progress, call 999.
