Catalytic converter thefts

Overnight Thursday/Friday we have experienced a number of catalytic converter thefts in the Yate area.

Vehicles targeted have included Citroen Berlingo and Picassos, Ford Galaxy and a Fiat Scudo.

Numerous products are available to reduce the risk of your vehicle(s) being targeted, but products accredited to 'Secured by Design' standard are Police preferred. These include the simple and cost effective Retainagroup etching kits; the Fleet Talk 'cat clamp' and the SMS 'cat' alarm, each of which might be viewed on the Secured by Design  website under the heading 'Vehicle Security'.

In addition to the above, and where appropriate, consider signage to emphasise preventative measures taken, and general security, such as compound security and parking vehicles in such a manner as to make 'cats' as inaccessible as possible.

Needless to say, please report any suspicious activity to the Police on the 101 number.

Distraction Burglary

Please be advised of the following which occurred at a property in Badminton on Saturday 22nd February at approximately 19.45 hours.

Victim - elderly female.

Unknown male knocked at front door wearing a yellow jacket with "Police" written on it. He has informed the occupier he was conducting enquiries following burglaries of cash in the area and asked the victim if she had any cash in her house. She took the first male upstairs to show him, at which point a second male entered the property and removed the cash whilst first male distracted the victim. Suspects then left via the front door. No vehicle or direction of travel seen.

1) W/M, late 30s, 5' 4, stocky build, round face, clean shaven, wearing a sleeveless yellow Hi-Vis top, with the word POLICE on the front in light blue and a wool hat.
2) W/M, late 30s, 6'0", slim build, oval face, unkempt, wearing a blue hooded top with hood up and pulled around his face.

Please circulate and advise all to be vigilant, genuine Officers will always provide identification but if in doubt do NOT let them in, call the Police immediately on the 999 number.

Police Alert Message for Westerleigh Village

Just to advise you of the following incident which occurred at a house in Newman Close between Wednesday 16.00 and Thursday 07.50 hours, details as follows:-

During the time stated, unknown person has entered back garden to location by unknown means and torn the lid of a green oblong storage bin.

Please circulate and advise all to be vigilant, to report any suspicious activity to the Police on the 101 number.

Please be on your guard against unexpected callers.
We have had some information from our colleagues in Bristol that visits from doorstep salesmen have been a common feature of their enquiries following recent burglaries. These salesmen are said to have travelled from the Middlesborough area.
Our advice is:
.Always put the door chain on and ask to see the pedlar's certificate of anyone selling door-to-door and if you are at all suspicious shut the door and call us straight away on 101. Selling door-to-door without a licence is an offence.
.Make sure doors and windows are secure so no one can sneak into your home while you are engaged at the front door.
.Look out for elderly and vulnerable neighbours and call us immediately if you see anyone you don't know who is acting suspiciously around a vulnerable neighbours' home. 
.Always secure all windows and doors when you are not at home. 
.Set your security alarm if you have one. 
.Use timers switches to make it appear as if someone is home. 
.Call us immediately on 101 if you have concerns about people you have seen acting suspiciously in your area. If you see a crime in progress, call 999.

More Railway Bridge Work

Network Rail have submitted notices to carry out works on the double railway bridges over Westerleigh Road, as you enter the village from Yate. The works are in 3 stages and will involve the use of two way temporary traffic lights. The dates are 30th January until 8th February, 17th February until 26th February and 5th March until 7th March 2014.

Hopefully we will not have the problems we had last time as the road will not be closed.
